Large-Scale 3D-Printed Coffee Table Prototype

- Industry: Furniture / Art & Design
- Challenge: A sculptural coffee table over one metre long needed to retain its artistic form while achieving the structural stability and manufacturability required for a large physical prototype.
- Solution: We used large-format SLA 3D printing and optimized the hollow structure with integrated internal supports, reducing material usage while improving structural stability and preserving the original design.
This case study presents the development of a large-scale 3D printed coffee table prototype, demonstrating how additive manufacturing can accelerate the realization of complex furniture concepts while reducing tooling requirements and development lead times. The project involved optimizing the CAD model for large-format printing, segmenting the design for manufacturability, ensuring structural integrity, and achieving high-quality surface finishes through controlled post-processing and assembly. By leveraging Design for Additive Manufacturing (DfAM) principles, the prototype successfully validated form, fit, and functionality before production-scale investment. The project highlights the value of large-format 3D printing as a rapid prototyping solution for custom furniture, architectural products, and industrial design applications where design flexibility, faster iteration, and cost-effective validation are critical to product development.
